Willert A. Kester, age 95, of Omro, died Monday morning June 29, 2015, at Aurora Medical Center in Oshkosh.
He was born June 23, 1920, to the late William and Elsie (Brandenburg) Kester, growing up on the family farm in Fremont. Willert was a graduate of Weyauwega High School and the Oshkosh Business College. On July 25, 1942, he married Eleanor Baier in Oshkosh. Willert served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and was assigned to Army Finance School in Wake Forest, North Carolina, then was stationed in Stockton, California with the Ordinance Depot Finance Division. Willert was awarded the Sharp Shooter Medal and was later given an Honorable Certified Disability Discharge.
For 29 ½ years Willert was employed with the U.S. Post Office as a clerk and rural carrier retiring in 1972. He bought Wild Game Food Nurseries in Omro, harvested plants and was a consultant for replanting areas that were destroyed by progress and for wildlife areas, which included traveling throughout the United States and authoring several magazine articles on the subject. Willert enjoyed hunting, raising rabbits and pheasants, and gardening. He was active in golfing, square, round, and ballroom dancing, traveling, cruising, spending winter months in Florida, and special times with his dear family. Willert was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church in Winneconne, and an honorary member of NARFE.
Willert is survived by his wife of almost 73 years, Eleanor Kester, of Omro; his children, David (Patricia) Kester, of Omro; Karen (Francis) Sedlachek, of Oshkosh; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Newton Kester; and nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and friends.
Along with his parents, Willert was also preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.
A visitation for family and friends will be on Tuesday, July 7, 2015, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Mueller Funeral Home, 904 E. Main St. Winneconne. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 7 at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Mark Albrecht officiating. Cremation will follow and inurnment will be at a later date.
