Mary Ann (Muraski) Mapes died peacefully on July 26, 2015, at her home, surrounded by love from her husband and children, in Winneconne after a short battle with cancer. She was 73. Mary Ann is survived by her husband, Chuck; her daughter Mary Beth Steen and son Mike Mapes (Kari) and grandchildren; Alex and Ashley Steen, Macy and Carson Mapes. She is preceded by her mother Goldabell Schultz.
Mary Ann was born on November 1, 1941, in Oshkosh, WI where she grew up most of her life, attending St. Peter catholic grade school and graduating from Oshkosh High School where she enjoyed twirling baton, marching in the drum and bugle corps and cheerleading all through high school. After high school she went to work in the histology lab at Mercy Medical Center in Oshkosh, soon after that she met Chuck and they married at St. Peter's church on September 11, 1965. While living a short time in Milwaukee, WI, Rockford IL, and Fond du Lac, WI they then settled back in Oshkosh for the next 17 years where they raised a family. In those years Mary Ann enjoyed the many activities of her kids, working at Emmeline Cook elementary school and traveling.
Later she and Chuck moved to Minnesota, were both of her children had moved and were starting families. In Minneapolis she enjoyed working at Fairview Ridges hospital and all four of her grandchildren being born. In 2009 they returned to Winneconne to retire on the Wolf River.
Mary Ann loved to travel and was fortunate enough to travel to all 50 United States as well as her many travels abroad. When she was not traveling, she simply enjoyed anything that included her children and grandchildren. She was most happy when watching her grandsons play basketball, hockey, and baseball games and both granddaughters cheerleading.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held for Mary Ann at St. Mary Catholic Church 210 Pleasant Drive, Winneconne. A time of visitation and support will be held for Mary Ann on Tuesday July 28, 2015, from 4:00 -6:00 p.m. at the church with a Mass to follow. Friends will be invited to join the Mapes family in celebrating the Life of Mary Ann with a light meal to be served after Mass at the church. In lieu of flowers gifts can be sent to the family.
