Where Caring Is A Family Tradition
William "Bill" Hook
Winneconne, Wisconsin
William "Bill" Hook, of Winneconne, passed away on Monday, July 25, 2011, at his home with his family. He was born January 12, 1925, to William H. and Hattie C. (Wheeler) Hook at the family's home in the beautiful valley of Lodi, Wisconsin. One of seven boys, Bill loved life and family in Lodi where he graduated from high school and soon joined the U.S. Navy, followed by training at Great Lakes and duty aboard the U.S.S. Pasadena CL65 in the South Pacific. Highlights of his military duty included a typhoon in which three ships were lost. Later his ship escorted the U.S.S. Missouri into Tokyo Bay for the signing of the peace treaty with Japan. Bill returned from service in 1946, attended Madison Business College and was employed by Rural Mutual Insurance Company for forty years. In 1949, he met and married the love of his life, Myrtle Winegarden, and together they raised five children. Bill's work took the family to Eau Claire and Appleton, and his love for small town life took the family to Winneconne in 1962, where they built their present home and remained until his passing.
Bill was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Winneconne, Fox Valley Insurance Adjusters Association, Giles-Luce American Legion Post 364-Winneconne, Winnebago County Sheriff's Reserve, 59-year member of Lodi Valley Lodge No.99 F&AM, and life member of Winneconne Lodge No.186 F&AM. He was elected Master of Winneconne Lodge in 1985 and had served as Chaplain. Bill was also a 32° Scottish Rite Mason of the Valley of Green Bay.
Bill enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, and woodworking. He was proud of the home he and members of the family built, with their own hands. Bill was a kind man with a good sense of humor who enjoyed his family above all else.
He was preceded in death by his parents and half-brother, Alman Hook.
Bill is survived by his wife of 61 years, Myrtle; his five children, whom he loved more than life itself, Cary Hook, of Winneconne; Steven (Marilyn) Hook, of Winneconne; Linda (Dale "Rusty") Ondrejka, of Winneconne; Nancy (Tom) Haanen, of Oshkosh; Patricia Khan, of Wauwatosa; twelve grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
