Donald Robert Hurdle, aged 96, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2021, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, in the company of his family. Don was born on October 10, 1924, in Polo, Illinois, to Mabelle (Richardson) and Lester C. Hurdle. He graduated from Polo High School and after service in the Navy, went on to graduate from the University of Illinois as an engineer. After college, he settled in Rockford, Illinois, where he and his wife became parents of three children. He enjoyed travel with family and friends and was an active member of the Unitarian Church. Don had a lifelong love of music and took great pleasure in both performing and listening to music of all types. Tragically, he and Eleanor faced the sorrow of losing all three of their children before they reached adulthood.

In 1989, Don married Mary Johnson and became part of her family. He was open-hearted and generous with her children and their spouses, and to the grandchildren he was Grandpa Donnie. In retirement, he and Mary moved to Wisconsin and then Florida, enjoying one another’s company and their free time. Don continued his interest in engineering, applying his knowledge to everything from fastener patents to household items and automobiles. He was interested in the lives of his family members and supported all their endeavors. Don enjoyed reading, exercise, politics, and good conversation. His love of puns gave everyone a glimpse of his quick wit and good humor. Don took great care of Mary in her final years, during which time they moved to Winneconne, Wisconsin, to be close to their family.

Don is survived by his stepchildren, Deborah (Steven) Viktora, Wilmette, IL; David (Michele) Johnson, Rockford, IL; and Philip (Molly) Johnson, Winneconne, WI. He is further survived by six step-grandchildren and twelve step-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two nieces.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; children, John, Holly, and Lee Ellen; wife, Mary; brother, Melvin; and his first wife, Eleanor.

It was Don’s wish that there be no services. He brought a lot of happiness to our lives, and we will smile when we remember him. Mueller Funeral Home-Winneconne is assisting the family with arrangements.

Memorial donations for Don may be made to the charity of your choice.

The family would like to thank Dr. Christopher Rocke, and the staffs of Bella Vista, Mercy Medical Center and Heartland Hospice for taking care of Don.

If you wish please submit online condolences to muellerfh.net.

On behalf of the Phil Martin family I want to say how blessed we were to have Don in our lives. Don and Phil worked together for many years and were the best of work buddies as well as a wonderful friendship throughout the years. Their engineering minds and musical minds totally harmonized. The Martin family will be honoring Don with a charity of our choice. Sincerely, Becky Martin
