Where Caring Is A Family Tradition
Doris L. (Thorson) Davenport passed away peacefully with her son-in-law and daughter at her side on March 30, 2021. She was 91.
Doris was born on July 21, 1929, in Neenah, Wisconsin. She graduated from Neenah High School in 1947. She moved to California shortly thereafter, where she studied, and eventually taught, modeling.
She met Joe Davenport in early 1953 and they were married on July 3rd of that year. She moved with Joe to his home in Texas late that year, so that he could assist his family.
She and Joe lived in several cities and towns around Texas, including San Antonio, Abilene, Dallas, Nacogdoches, Tyler, and Lindale.
While living in Lindale, Doris studied nursing and in 1974 she earned her LVN certificate. She worked at Colonial Guest Nursing Home in Lindale from 1974 until 1977, then worked at the Texas Health Center in Owentown, Texas. She spent her time there working with cancer patients. In late 1981 she stopped working due to health problems.
After re-locating to Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1986 she began working as a private duty nurse. She would continue in this field until retiring in 2003. She recalled the patients for whom she worked with great fondness, recalling names of family members and friends. She remained good friends with some of her patient’s children for many years.
Doris loved jazz music, animals, good books, cooking for her family, and listening to the sound of rain. She loved her extended family dearly, and deeply missed seeing them. She attended the annual Thorson family reunions as often as possible, attending for the final time in June 2008. She loved, and was loved, by all of her extended family.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Sadie (Reier) Thorson and Charles Thorson; brother Willis and sister-in-law Mildred; sisters Pearl Thorson, Beatrice White and brother-in-law Irv; sister Nelda Glashoff and brother-in-law Ernie; sister Mabel Wallace and brother-in-law Dan; sister Jeannette Smarzinski and brother-in-law Eph; sister Joyce Fisher and brother-in-law Ray; sister Dorothy Holloway and brother-in-law Fran; and brother-in-law Norris Mathison. She was also preceded in death by her spouse, Joe Davenport.
She is survived by sister Mildred Mathison, of Winchester, Wisconsin; daughter Jeanne Davenport Jennings and grandson Brian Wayne Jennings, of Texas; and daughter Amy Davenport Franklin and son-in-law Bryan Franklin, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, as well as numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins residing across the country.
