Herbert W. Weiss, age 99, of Omro, died Saturday, September 1, 2012, at Webster Manor in Omro, where he has been a resident for almost 2 years.
He was born November 30, 1912, in the town of Rushford to the late William and Amanda (Hubrig) Weiss. Herb's father William also died on September 1. Herb attended the Delhi School. On August 16, 1942, he married Dorothy Bartelt at Grace Lutheran Church in Omro and they made their home and farmed in the town of Rushford until retiring in 1975, at which time they moved to Omro. The Weiss family farm will be recognized as a Century Farm on September 12, 2012. Herb was a lifelong member of Grace Lutheran Church in Omro, where he had served as an usher. Along with being a farmer, Herb also enjoyed vegetable gardening and playing canasta and cribbage. He will be remembered as a gentle man.
Herb is survived by his children, Judith (Allan) Peterson, of Fargo, North Dakota; William (Carol) Weiss, of Omro; Margaret (Dave) Wodvarka, of Milwaukee; Linda (Paul) Haferbecker, of Grantsburg, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Lisa (Jim) McGarvey, Neil (Carrie) Peterson, Kurt Peterson, Jeff (Jill) Weiss, Julie Weiss (special friend, Brian), Doug Weiss (special friend, Jennifer), Beth (Phil) Parnell, Patti (Dnison) Penndragon, Mark Brei, Jason Haferbecker, Ryan (Jennifer) Haferbecker, and Katie (Tony) DiBerardinis; eleven great-grandchildren and one expected soon; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Richard and Jeannie Bartelt, Laura Bartelt, all of Oshkosh; and step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, step-great-great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
Herb was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, on January 5, 2005; one great-grandson, Brent Alan Jolin; one son-in-law, Gerald Brei; one brother, three sisters-in-law and three brothers-in-law, Gerhard and Florence Weiss, Henry and Esther Bartelt, Gary Bartelt, and Dr. Rev. Victor and Zae Bartelt.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 7, 2012, at 11:00 a.m.at Grace Lutheran Church, 720 Jackson Ave. Omro, with Pastor Richard Bartholomew officiating. Burial will be in the Omro Cemetery. A visitation for family and friends will be on Thursday, September 6, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the church and will continue on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.

What a great legacy to have lived 99 years and have so many relatives. I'll remember him from growing up on the Diley farm and visiting my friend Judith. My sympathy to all of you as you remember a gentle, quiet man . Peace to all.
