H. Bernece Schmude Meyer, age 94, of Winneconne, went peacefully into the arms of Jesus on Thursday, September 20, 2012.
She was born June 18, 1918, in the town of Winneconne to the late Joseph and Belle (Stutzman) Eagon. Bernece was a 1937 graduate of Oshkosh High School. On September 2, 1939, she married Erwin C. Schmude and they made their home in Butte des Morts. Bernece was a homemaker and took care of the book work for Erwin's livestock trucking business. Erwin preceded her in death on April 26, 1978. On August 12, 1979, Bernece married Gerhard Meyer and he preceded her in death on February 8, 1986. Bernece started as a part-time postal clerk in the Butte des Morts post office and on July 31, 1971 was named the postmaster, retiring in 1980. For 16 years, she made her home in Florida, until moving back to the Winneconne area in 1996. Bernece was a member of Winneconne Christian Fellowship.
Bernece is survived by one daughter, Jerelyn (Marvin) Melberg; one step-son, William (Vicky) Meyer; two grandchildren and their families, Andrew (Jaci) Grignon, and their children, Rachael, Andrew, and Joshua; Jody (Jim) Richter, and their children, Jimmy and Katelyn Bernece; one brother, Burdette Eagon; step-grandchildren, David (Shelly) Eggman, Eric (Lisa) Eggman, Kari Massey, Elizabeth (Michael) Witcik, Kathy (Bob) Peterson; six step-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Along with her parents and two husbands, Bernece was also preceded in death by her son, Bryce Schmude; her sister and brother-in-law, Beatrice and Gerhard Boss; and a sister-in-law, Sarah Eagon.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, September 23, 2012, at 3:00 p.m. at Winneconne Christian Fellowship, 313 N. Ninth Ave. Winneconne, with Pastor Dan Gibson officiating. Burial will be in the Bell Cemetery, town of Winneconne. A visitation for family and friends will be on Sunday at the church from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Alzheimer's Association.
