George R. Lee passed away peacefully at Park View Health Center, on Sunday, November 18, 2012, at the age of 83. He was born in Omro on April 22, 1929, the son of John and Agnes (Herbst) Lee. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Winneconne.
As a teenager, George worked at Happy Jacks Garage in Eureka. He enjoyed baseball and was the star pitcher on the Poygan "Fighting Irish" Baseball Team.
On October 1, 1952, George was married to Laura Jean Crowley at St. Thomas Church, Poygan. At that time, he worked at the Winnebago County Highway Department. After he was married, George worked in construction, traveling around the state.
In 1960 he moved to Borth and farmed for several years. George was active in the NFO.
In 1970 he started working as an electrician for Schmude Electric, Berlin. George retired in 1997, and after his retirement, he was very active in the restoration of the St. Thomas Church, and cared for the cemetery. He enjoyed golf and played whenever he could. George was generous and loved helping others.
This October, George and Jean celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
George is survived by his wife, Jean; and his two daughters, Mary (Lee) Lucareli and her husband Kevin Eichelberger; and Sara (Lee) and Paul Hajos; granddaughter, Kate Lucareli; and step-granddaughters, Kahri Hajos and Meredith Eichelberger. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Janice Lee, and many nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, George was preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Lee and wife Gladys; brother, Francis "Hanky" Lee; and sister, Roseann Kumbier.
A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, November 24, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, 210 Pleasant Dr. Winneconne, with Fr. Doug LeCaptain and Sr. Pam Biehl officiating. A visitation for family and friends will be on Friday, November 23 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Mueller Funeral Home, 904 E. Main St. Winneconne, where the Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Saturday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff at Park View Health Center for all of the wonderful care and compassion for George and his family. Also, thank you to Aurora Hospice for their care in the past.
