Sarah Walter, age 71 passed away on April 6, 2013, at home after a brave battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born Sarah Jean Green on September 5, 1941, in Freeport, IL, the only child of Frank and Jean (Brinkley) Green, who were originally from North Carolina. Sarah graduated from Woodlawn High School, Birmingham, AL, in 1959, and attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (now UNC-G) from 1959-1961. She returned home to work and later moved to San Francisco, CA, where she met her future husband.
On June 25, 1966, in San Francisco, she married Michael Roy Walter, son of Roy and Glenna (Poe) Walter. The couple made their first home in San Diego, where Michael was stationed with the U.S. Navy. During his 20-year Navy career they lived in six different states, settling in Winneconne, WI, when he retired from military service. During about 35 years of employment, Sarah worked in a wide variety of office positions, retiring in 2005 after 22 years with Winnebago County, WI, as a secretary, an account clerk, and a medical transcriptionist.
She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, Winneconne, serving as a deacon, elder, Sunday school teacher, and choir member. Sarah was a member of Giles-Luce Unit #364, American Legion Auxiliary in Winneconne, a charter member of the Winneconne Kiwanis Club, where she served as secretary for most of its 20-plus years. She had co-founded the Lucky Charms 4-H Club in 1982 and had done volunteer work for the Navy Relief Society and for Stitches of Love. Sarah had been Conductress of Winneconne Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, and Guardian Secretary of Bethel #36 Oshkosh, International Order of Job's Daughters. With her husband, who was Grand Treasurer of Masons in Wisconsin for seven years, Sarah had participated in many Masonic-related activities both locally and statewide. In addition to these organizations, Sarah's interests included music, reading, needlework, and writing.
Her parents and all aunts and uncles preceded Sarah in death.
She is survived by her husband, Michael; their only child, Jennifer Lynn Walter and her husband Damon, of Hoffman Estates, IL; a few cousins; and a brother-in-law, Jim (Judy) Walter of Halfway, MO.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at 7:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 32 S. Third Ave. Winneconne, with Pastor Mara Rivera officiating. A visitation for family and friends will be at the church on Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. until the time of the service.
