George H. Cross died on his 90th birthday, Thursday, July 11, 2013, at Bethel Home in Oshkosh under Aurora Hospice care. He was born July 11, 1923, in Oshkosh to the late George and Jessye (Gould) Cross. George was a 1940 graduate of Winneconne High School. He served in the Pacific with the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. On April 21, 1944, George married Kathryn Frances Warncke at the First United Presbyterian Church in Winneconne. For 43 years George worked for Wisconsin Bell (AT&T), starting out as a lineman, and his work assignments included New York City in 1969, Miami in 1972, and Arizona in 1979. In his retirement he kept bees. George was an outdoor enthusiast, enjoying hunting and fishing. For over 20 years he was a volunteer DNR Hunter Education instructor. He also liked to play cards and listen to big band music. George was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Winneconne.
George is survived by his wife of 69 years, Kate, of Oshkosh; two daughters, Donna (Dick) Wara, of Appleton; Jane Cross, of Oshkosh; one son, Mike (Debbie) Cross, of Prairie du Chien; five grandchildren, Jenny (Greg) Martin, of St. Louis; Matt Wara, of Appleton; Emily Laird (Eric Schafer), of Madison; Amy Laird, of Minneapolis; Lisa Laird, of Bozeman, Montana; three great-grandchildren, Ella, Ethan, and Easton Martin, of St. Louis.
Along with his parents, George was also preceded in death by one sister, Juanita Krueger; and one brother, Lowell Cross.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, July 15, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at Mueller Funeral Home, 904 E. Main St. Winneconne, with Pastor Mara Rivera officiating, with military honors to follow. A visitation for family and friends will be on Monday at the funeral home from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Entombment will be on Tuesday, July 16 at Lake View Memorial Park, Oshkosh.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established in George's name.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Duffy, Dr. Lake, the Aurora Dialysis team, Aurora Hospice, Bethel Nursing Home staff, Cabulance, and paramedics, who all assisted George in his time of need.

To Mr. Cross's family, and particularly, my classmate Donna his daughter. Donna, I don't ever recall meeting your Dad personally, but you were his representative, and you "done him proud" as Southern phrases would say. You're very good quality, Donna, and that surely comes from a quality upbringing, including your Dad. I know you deeply loved your father, and your parents. If it be a comfort to you, surely he's looking down from Heaven, and smiling on you and encouraging you as you are left here to carry on. May God Smile On you in your time of sorrow and loss.
