Andrew J. Welsch, age 92, of the town of Poygan, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on January 19, 2014. He was born in Lomira on March 5, 1921, the son of the late Oscar and Alexia Welsch. Andy graduated from St. Joseph's Parochial School and Goodrich High School, Fond du Lac He entered military service in 1942 and served his country in World War II in Europe, earning three battle stars and separated from the service in 1946 with the rank of Captain. Andy continued to serve the Army and Air Force as a civilian until 1954 and was awarded the Meritorious Service Award for his civilian service.
He married Josefa Winkenbach in 1954 and returned to the United States and operated Welsch's Resort and Marine Sales in the town of Poygan, was assessor of the town of Winneconne, vice-chairman of the Winnebago County Board of Adjustments, president of the Sanitary District No. 1, appraiser and owner/broker of Ajay Realty.
Andy was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Winneconne, where he served as a trustee and had been chairman of the finance committee. He was also a lifetime member of the V.F.W.
Andy is survived by his wife of 60 years, Josefa; daughter, Ute Alto, of Neenah; son, Rudy (Patricia) Wiegand, of Brown Deer; grandchildren, Carmen (David) Smith, of Hales Corners; Rebecca Vold, of Omro; Scott (Sonya) Wiegand, of Two Rivers; Sabina (Steve) Schultz, of Elkhart Lake; and Michael Alto, of Neenah; ten great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Jeanette Widdup, of West Allis; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Along with his parents, Andy was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, David Alto; a grandson, Eric Wiegand; two brothers, Leonard and Ralph Welsch; and two sisters, Dolores Zehren, and Dorothy Schwei.
A funeral Mass was held on Saturday, January 25, 2014, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Winneconne. Military honors followed and inurnment was in the Winneconne Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for St. Mary Catholic Church, Winneconne.
Andy's family wishes to thank Affinity Hospice, Cindy, Barb, and staff, and his at home caregivers, Erin and Debbie for all of the support and assistance they provided.
