Donald Hugh McDonald, M.D.

Dr. Donald H. McDonald, a Winneconne area physician for nearly half a century died at Mercy Medical Center Saturday evening October 31, 2009. He was 87.
The son of Donald James and Frances Rose (McCullough) McDonald, Dr. McDonald was born March 5, 1922 during a terrific ice storm, at the Forest Avenue, Fond du Lac homestead farm where his father and siblings were born. His grandparents John Donald and Isabella (McMillan) McDonald settled there on their wedding day in 1857. He remained closely attached to the homestead throughout his life.
Dr. Mac as he was known by patients, peers, and friends started his academic career after his 1939 Fond du Lac High School graduation by attending Oshkosh State Teachers College 1939 to 1942. He was a 1951 graduate of Marquette Medical School and completed an internship at Mercy Medical Center in 1952. He opened the McDonald Clinic September 15, 1952 and was in continuous practice until retirement in 1998. The result of his enlistment in the U.S. Army Air Force in 1942 was to offer experiences which fortified his resolve to become a physician. In April 1945 he attended Officer Candidate School, Carlisle Barracks Pennsylvania (Army Service Forces Medical Field Service School), and advanced to First Lieutenant Air Transport command, July 1945. He served as Adjutant and Chief Executive Officer at Army Air Force Hospitals until discharged from Service to his Country.
During his medical career Dr. Mac held professional memberships and worked on committees locally, regionally, and statewide too numerous to enumerate. He was an active staff member at Mercy Medical Center, Oshkosh; Medical Director of Omro Care Center; Clinical Instructor Department of Family Medicine, Medical college of Wisconsin; Adjunct Professor Department of Nursing UW-Oshkosh, and was a Charter Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
He lived and practiced medicine in a most dynamic period in medical history. From the advent of penicillin antibiotics on to non-invasive fiberoptic and laser surgical procedures. This era was exciting and excited Dr. Mac. He loved the work and the long hours. Hearkening back to his days growing up on the family farm, he knew the meaning of hard work but never considered medicine hard work, rather an enjoyment, in spite of legendary long clinic hours.
For decades Dr. Mac offered the opportunity to high school and college students with career interests in the medical sciences to work in his clinic under the direction of the McDonald Clinic staff. He was so proud when these students continued in health related careers. He felt that hard work, dedication, and access to opportunity were important for success. He supported academic as well as athletic programs to help improve opportunity. American Legion Baseball, Badger Boys and Girls State, and the Winneconne High School Scholarship program are just a few he loved to help.
Dr. Mac and his sisters Mary Jane McDonald and Helen (Maurice) Kaufman of Fond du Lac, traced the genealogical history of their family from Scotland's Isle of Skye to Lancaster, Glengarry County, Ontario, Canada. Helen and Mary Jane preceded him in death in 1991 and 2003 respectively.
Survivors are Patricia his wife of 53 years, and six children and 14 grandchildren: Dr. Donald J. McDonald, wife Sylvia (Donald Thomas, Clare, Maeve, MacKenzie) of Oshkosh; Dr. Robert McDonald, wife Dr. Caroline McDonald (Patrick, Anne, Mike) of Oshkosh; Dr. Mary McDonald of Winneconne; Dr. Meghan McDonald, husband David Harshman (Mike, Matt) of Houston, TX; Dr. Shaun McDonald, wife Dr. Elizabeth Kimbrough (Heather, Beth, Michelle, Madeline) of Oshkosh, and Heather Sleeman, husband Mark Sleeman (Hugh) of Winneconne.
Although Dr. Mac left active medical practice in 1998, he continued to have a care and concern for the citizens of the Winneconne area. He especially loved to recall his many deliveries over the years.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, November 5, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, 210 Pleasant Drive, Winneconne, with Rev. Doug LeCaptain officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the Rienzi Cemetery in Fond du Lac on Thursday at 3 p.m. A Visitation will be on Wednesday, November 4th, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the CHURCH, where a Knights of Columbus Service will be held at 7 p.m. and a Prayer Service will follow. Visitation will continue on Thursday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass.
Memorials in the name of Dr. D.H. McDonald for Winneconne High School scholarships can be made to the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation, 230 Ohio Street, Suite 100 , Oshkosh, WI., 54902.

Dear McDonald family,I was a young and naive staff nurse on the old 2 South at MMC. Dr. Mac taught me much. I knew that I could call him at any hour and he would respond with genuine concern. Dr. Mac was truly one of a kind. I wish you peace and know that loving memories will help ease your sadness.

Dr. McDonald was my doctor from the time I was born until my parents divorce. I still remember being in his office like it was yesterday; the smell of rubbing alcohol, the Norman Rockwell pictures, and best of all... getting the pink piece of paper with the ice cream cone on it to take to Rice Pharmacy for a treat after our visit. I am a mother of three and we have carried on that tradition of an ice cream after their doctor visit. He was a great man and I've heard many wonderful stories from my father, aunts & uncles. The last time I saw him was a couple of years ago. I ran into him in the parking lot of the church where my Grandma Fran's funeral which was being held in Fond du Lac. He asked who I was (he knew I was a Tovar kid) and gave me a big smile and hug. It mean a lot to our family to have him there and I know for my Aunt Molly. I'm sure your family is proud of the man he was and way he has touched so many lives. My deepest sympathies to your family.

To the McDonald family... I am sorry to hear of your loss. I have many wonderful and precious memories of Winneconne from my five years of teaching in the Winneconne Middle School during the 1970's. A couple of the McDonald children were in middle school during my tenure there. I remember you as being a loving and caring family and very much dedicated to learning. Those things don't just happen by themselves. They are the result of parents who would do anything for their children. Remember your Dad for all the good times you shared. May God be with all of you.

Dr. Mac was more than a doctor to me. He was a kind and caring person beside being physician to a young, inexperienced mother. He was always available day or night to tend to the needs of my family. I am now a grandmother to seven wonderful, healthy granddaughters. My own children grew up safe and healthy because of Dr. Mac. When our family was short of funds and had trouble paying our bill, Dr. Mac cleared our account. The greatest gifts he left behind is not his great medical career but his great love for his fellow man. I will never forget him. The world seems darker today. My deepest sympathies to his family and may God grant him eternal rest. Goodbye Dr. Mac.

I'm sure I'm not alone when I say we lost one of the GREATEST doctors in the world! Dr. Mac has been a part of my family for what seems like forever. From the care he gave to my grandparents to my dad who passed away in 1965 from stomach cancer to our son who's now 31 years old. Going above and beyond his doctors duties to being a pallbearer for my uncle's funeral. He was truely a great man and doctor! I'll always remember his "hello, hello, hello" when he'd answer the many phone calls. You could even call him in the middle of the night and you'd always get the familiar, "hello, hello, hello". We moved from the Larsen area to Neenah and still made the trips to Winneconne because after trying doctors in Neenah none compared to Dr. Mac. I always said I trusted him with mine and my families life. There have been times when illnesses have struck my family since Dr. Mac retired and how I wished I could have imposed on him for a second opinion. I just had to write and express my deepest sympathy to all of Dr. McDonalds family. We all were blessed with a Great Man!

Dear McDonald Family, First, your family is in my thoughts and prayers as you transition through this difficult time. I was one of the many high school students who had the opportunity to learn what the medical field was all about from working at the clinic from 1990-1992. Although I did not choose to continue in the medical field at that time, it is still something I still find myself contemplating even almost 20 years later. I learned so much from Dr. Mac and not just relating to medicine. His work ethic, determination, and drive was something I've come to admire through the years. I certainly did not have a full appreciation for the opportunity he had given to me at the time of my employment however I've come to see the value and foundation it has offered to my life. He believed in me much more than I believed in myself. I'm grateful for the numerous stories he shared & the life lessons he taught me. May you find comfort in the many lives that he touched.

To the family of Dr. Mac. This is not easy to do as Dr. was such a very close friend of our family for more than 70+ years. My grandparents Lee and Dorothy Rymer and Earl and Gladys Kunde were of his first patients. My grandfather Lee Rymer always spoke as he remembered Dr. Mac as a young boy working on the Emporium Farms in Fond Du Lac. and as well Dr's two sisters. With strong will and dtermination we have always been used to having a good doctor in town. Unfortunately things have changed so much. When I was a little boy my mom Patricia Kunde gave birht to me and I had acquired at the hospital a viral disease that had been floating around at the hospital and Dr. worked so closely with mom as I was not to make it, but thru Dr's strong will and determination I pulled thru. My family will forever remember Dr. Mac we loved him so dearly as a friend and considered him part of our family. My grandparents knew no better and relied on Dr. forever. also as I remember Dr. KillCuttey( Not sure on spelling and Dr. Driscoll as( Dr. Drizzle drawers) my Grand Pa Lee would say, we grew to have so much respect and all were so accountable and dependable. Mrs. M. you have so much to be proud of and Thanks for standing by DR. Mac for all these years and supporting all his efforts and ambitions. Thanks for all the ongoing support in the community. For the family take a step back for awhile, look at all your father has stood for and please continue to uphold the medical practice for what Dr. Mac worked a lifetime. Please keep the values of what family meant and stay accountable, keep the values and hold onto the morales that Dr. Mac stood for. Thanks again for all the times we had with your Husband, father grandfather and friend. We will miss him all so much. We will keep him in our prayers just as we will Pat and all your family. God Bless and remember when we all get to Heaven we can reunite. Mark and Cheryl Kunde Family Sarah, Ananda, Stacey, Mitchell, Rhonda, and Wanda

My sympathies to doc mcdonald's family on his passing. It caught mny interest that he died on halloween. As such a good man, he immediately joined and became one of the saints in heaven. Doc was a great doctor, a good and prolific family man, and also the face of Winneconne legion baseball. That's how i knew him. He and Doc Herman of Oshkosh(where i'm from and live)promoted, built, and managed legion baseball and kept it thriving in the '70s when i played and coached . Dr. Mcdonald was a good man. It was my privilege to know him and talk, joke, and laugh with him. My name will not be familiar to the family, but I was glad to know Doc, and am saddened by his passing. Terry and Jeanne Footit. Our first son was born on July 10, 1970. Dr. McDonald delivered our son and at the time I wasn't sure if our insurance would cover the cost of the delivery. I explained the situation to Dr. McDonald and informed him that I would try to pay him first if the insurance didn't cover the delivery. I remember Dr. McDonald tapping me on the back to assure me everything would be fine and then he said, "If the insurance doesn't pay, don't worry father, the first one will be on me." I found out that over the years he put many families at ease by his generous actions. He will be greatly missed by all.

Pat, Donny, Mary, Robby, Meghan, Shaun and Heather... It is with great sadness that Bob told me of Dr's death and that I'm not there to help with the musical "sendoff" I would so deeply like to share with all of you. Through the years he did many WONDERFUL things for our family and this is one time I could've given in return. I'm so sad! From the impromptu housecalls when one of the kids was sick, sponsoring Polly @ Badger Girls, getting Linda into the medical field which she so dearly loved.... the list goes on and on and I HAVE often told him how much it meant to all of us. Know that I'll be with all of you on Thursday morning, though only in spirit. With DEEP sadness and sympathy to all of you, Bonnie Plummer and Beth, whom I'm visiting in Col. OH
