Maynard A. Birkholz, age 87, of Omro, died Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at Webster Manor in Omro. He was born May 23, 1922, in Omro to the late August and Elizabeth (Kersten) Birkholz. Maynard served his country during World War II with the U.S. Army with the 24th Infantry Division RCN, Recognizance Troop in the South Pacific. Upon discharge from the service Maynard attended the Oshkosh Business College and Lawrence University, and in 1948 began his career in banking. On September 24, 1949, he married Lois Retzlaff at Grace Lutheran Church in Omro. Maynard worked in banking until his retirement in 1987 at which time he was an assistant cashier, and after retiring he enjoyed being a courier for F & M Bank. Maynard was a charter member of Grace Lutheran Church in Omro, where he was the financial secretary for 34 years. He was also a member of the Kiwanis, a past member of the Jaycees, was on the board of the Omro Area Community Center, and was a member of the Daugherty-Hamilton American Legion Post 234, Omro.
Maynard is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lois Birkholz, of Omro; three daughters and sons-in-law, Sue Ann and Henry Clement, of Beloit; Amy and Eugene Kriener, of Burlington; Rebecca and Edwin Strey, of Omro; seven grandchildren, Jacqueline Clement, of Milwaukee; Catrien (Dusten) Slater, of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Nathan Clement, of Platteville; Gwendolyn (Todd) Pinnington, of Australia; Stephanie (Matthew) Shefchik, of Waunakee; Hannah and Andrew Strey, both of Omro; three great-grandchildren, Cole Xavier Pinnington, Abraham Matthew and Jane Gwendolyn Shefchik; one sister, Geraldine Birkholz, of West Bend; one sister-in-law, Joan Birkholz, of Milwaukee; one niece, Beth Bothe, of Milwaukee; one nephew, Mark Birkholz, of Milwaukee; and other relatives.
Along with his parents, Maynard was also preceded in death by one brother, Gerald Birkholz.
A Funeral Service for Maynard will be held on Saturday, December 12, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, 720 Jackson Ave., Omro, with Pastor Richard Bartholomew officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the Omro Cemetery. A Visitation for family and friends will be on Saturday at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
