Elmer Stertz, age 90, of Omro, died peacefully Monday February 8, 2016, at Westbrooke Manor in Oshkosh, where he had been a resident for the past 2 years. He was born April 24, 1925, in the town of Rushford to the late Henry, Sr. and Katherine (Triese) Stertz. On June 4, 1949, Elmer married Ruth Holdren at Grace Lutheran Church in Omro. Elmer was a lifelong farmer until his retirement. For 55 years, he was a representative for L.L.L. (Lutheran Layman's League), and for 5 straight years was awarded as the top representative. After retirement Elmer and Ruth traveled to Europe. Elmer enjoyed gardening; one year earning the Yard Beautification Award for Winnebago County. He was a Green Bay Packer fan, and enjoyed purple martins; being a member of the Purple Martin Society. Elmer was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Omro, where he had served as an elder, and he was a lifetime member of the Friends of Concordia University.
Elmer is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Elaine and Mervin Dehn, of Omro; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Along with his parents, Elmer was also preceded in death by his wife Ruth, on October 21, 2004; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Fred and Mary Stertz, Henry, Jr. and Kathleen Stertz, George and Helen Stertz, Alwin and Lenora Stertz; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Katherine and Robert Doughty, Mary and Lenard Smerling, and infant Clara Stertz.
A visitation for family and friends will be on Thursday, February 11, 2016, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Mueller Funeral Home 904 E. Main St. Winneconne. Visitation will continue on Friday, February 12 from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, 720 Jackson Ave. Omro. A funeral service will be held on Friday at 11:00 a.m.at the church with Pastor Richard Bartholomew officiating. Burial will be in the Omro Cemetery.
Elmer's family wishes to thank the staffs of Westbrooke Manor and Generations Hospice for all of their care and love shown to him.
