Donald D. Hartman, age 83, of Appleton, formerly of Winchester, died Saturday, April 9, 2022, at his home. He was born June 8, 1938, in Iowa to the late Harold and Bernice (Gray) Hartman. Don was a 1956 graduate of Eddyville High School. From November 1956 until August 1959, he served his country in the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division. On December 30, 1967, Don married Joan Shoemaker in Iowa. In 1968 a work transfer brought Don and Joan to Winneconne, where they lived for 10 years before moving to Winchester, where they resided for forty-three years until last year at which time they moved to Appleton. Don had worked for E.R. Wagner Company in Winneconne, and then later retired from EVCO Plastics in Oshkosh. Don enjoyed playing golf, crafting, and woodworking and was known locally for his rustic lawn furniture business. During his years in Winchester, he had served as an assistant scout master and also coached pee-wee league, and he was a member of Grace Lutheran Church. At home, Don was the self-appointed “King” of the family. He was the heart and backbone of the family, filling every moment with love and laughter. Don was a great husband and father, and his family was very important to him. He never missed any of his children’s or grandchildren’s events.
Don is survived by his wife of almost 55 years, Joan Hartman; his children, Melinda (Larry) Klemetson, Dorinda (Rick) Smith, Michael (Margaret Nyland) Hartman, Jennifer (Jason) Blank, Jill Peachy (fiancé, Tony Wild), Elizabeth (Tyler) Luebke; twelve grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Raymond and Jim; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Along with his parents, Don was also preceded in death by a daughter and son-in-law, Sara and Darrell Ewing; a brother, Phil; and two sisters, Mildred and Marjorie.
A visitation for family and friends will be on Monday, April 18, 2022, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Mueller Funeral Home 904 E. Main St. Winneconne. A graveside service will be held on Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the Oak Hill Cemetery, Neenah.

Thank everyone for their wishes This has been a very hard time for everyone I'm sure. Very hard to express my feelings. Dad ..I didn't get much time with you past few years but you left a lasting impression on me (don't mean on my butt). Since becoming a minister my outlook has changed. Your happy dancing with Jesus. We left here feel the loss in our lives but the joy for you. Love and miss you daddy.

We are so sorry to hear of your loss. Don's mother& my Dad were brother/sister. We spent lots of time with them when we were younger. He was such a nice person & easy to visit with. Prayers for comfort & peace for your family

The words are lost within me. I am so sad for all of you. Don is so dear to my heart, as is your whole family. I have such irreplaceable memories of countless overnights and visits back in the day. I even remember the time I biked from Winneconne to the top of Steeple Hill and thanks to Don, got a ride home so I wouldn’t have to bike. I always loved the swings he made and can still hear Liz saying, “Donald.” I know we each live and leave, but the leaving is such a salty experience for those of us still here. I know how strong you all are so I know you’ll get through yet another heartache moment by moment, but I also want you to know you are so very loved and supported and I wish I could be there to hug you each. Please know you are so deeply in my heart. Please give my dear Liz and Joan the deepest, warmest hugs for me. I love you Hartmans!

Don and I are first cousins. His mom Berniece and my mom Pearl were sisters. Don and his family visited my folks house in Rock Island, Illinois years ago, and stayed overnight. His daughter was about three years old. At some point during the visit, one of us looked out of the kitchen window, and there was the daughter trying to climb a six-foot-high chain link fence that surrounded a swimming pool. Don hustled out, peeled her off of the fence, and brought her inside. When he asked her what on earth she was thinking of, she pertly said. "I was gonna take a dip, Dad!"

A tireless worker, a humble veteran, a dedicated family man, a generous host and just an all around pleasure to spend time with. I’m a better person as the result of knowing Don and regret that we didn’t get the chance to play that final round of golf together. I’ll miss him.
