Where Caring Is A Family Tradition
Margaret Ann “Peggy”, “GG” Johnson, Winneconne, age 96 was welcomed into heaven with a ticker tape parade on April 22, 2022, by hundreds of family and friends that went before her and with her family by her side. Peg was born at home to the late George and Irene Broderick in the town of Poygan on January 1, 1926. She was the seventh of nine children. She and her family moved to Winneconne due to the passing of her father when she was 7. Peggy graduated from Winneconne High School and worked various jobs. Peg married her high school sweetheart Donald Johnson on June 30, 1945.Together they raised seven children on the family farm in Winchester. Though Peg considered her biggest accomplishment to be raising her family, she also enjoyed working outside the home as a dental assistant and later a bookkeeper retiring from the Wisconsin Association of School Boards office in Winneconne. She enjoyed participating in a number of organizations over the years including Civic League, Friends of the Library, the Historical Society and various committees as a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Winchester.
Peg loved doing crossword puzzles and watching sports but her biggest passion was golf, both watching and playing which she continued to do at age 95. Her “claim to fame” was her first hole-in-one at age 84 at Lake Breeze Golf Club (the course she had named). She and Don were also members of Ridgeway Country Club in Neenah for 32 years. They also enjoyed spending winters in Arizona until his passing.
Peg is survived by her children, Cynthia (Gene) Coy, Linda (Jerry) Charapata, James (JoEllen), Johnson, Susan (Steve) Elbing, Jack (Anna) Johnson. She is further survived by 15 grandchildren, Stephanie (Jeff) Ruesch, Sonya Sprague, Kevin Coy, Dr. Lisa (Vince) Farhood, Christopher (Rhonda) Johnson, Dustin (Linnea) Elbing, Ryan (Mamie) Elbing, Jessica (Bill) Bauer, Andy Johnson, Sara Jo (Joe) Thiel, Ross Podgorski, Rachel Podgorski, Megan (Steve) Ingalsbe, Michelle (Mike) Kowalski, Melissa (Scott) Godberson; 7 step-grandchildren, Kelly (Chris) Carlson, Paul (Michelle) Charapata, Julie (Jeff) Coy, Holly (Bob) Beard, Carl Schroeder, Erin Ross, Jeff (Sheila) Geitner; 43 great-grandchildren;1 great-great-grandchild; her sister-in-law, Patricia Broderick; son-in-law, Randolph Podgorski; daughter-in-law, Mary Johnson; 23 nieces and nephews; and Peg Gierke, who Mom considered another daughter as Peg was always there for her. And that’s called a “legacy”!
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; infant son, Donald Jr.; son, Michael; and daughter, Jane. Her 6 sisters and 2 brothers also preceded her in death.
She always felt that she was so blessed with a family that was so good to her. We were the ones who were blessed with her love and encouragement. She set the bar high in everything she did, instilling the values of hard work and staying active in both mind and body. She will be forever in our hearts and on our minds when we play golf, cards, board games, and bake! You could never leave her house without having some kind of sweet treat.
Visitation will be on Saturday, May 7, 2022, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, 8396 Steeple Hill Drive, Larsen, WI with the Celebration of Life at 11:30 a.m. Interment will follow in the Grace Lutheran Cemetery. The service at church will be live streamed, go to facebook.com/graceofwinchester.

Peggy was a special lady who could figure out how to handle most of life’s problems as a winner. Loved her very much and will miss her. Always enjoyed going to the farm and playing with the other kids. RIP Peggy and say hi to the rest of the family that proceeded you in heaven.

Peggy was a very special lady. We worked together for 3 years at WASB. Peggy and Don rescued my husband and I one night after work when my car wouldn't start. She invited me to join her for the Winneconne womens fashion shows at the Fin and I enjoyed attending that with her for a couple of years. When we moved to Winneconne in 2006 we kept in touch and would go out for lunch. Jack put in our patio on Breeze St. After moving to NC in 2008 we lost touch. She inspired my love for golf and was always so gracious. Our sympathy to the whole family.
