Mary (Schwai) Kuhns entered into eternal peace at her home in Winneconne on Wednesday, March 29, 2023. The youngest of three children, she was born to Alfred and Frieda Schwai on January 18, 1947, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Mary graduated from Nicolet High School in Glendale, Wisconsin. Around then, she met Tim Kuhns at a wedding reception. Mary and Tim dated, fell in love, and were married September 4, 1965. In their 57-year marriage, their family grew to include Steven, Mark, and Kelly, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She adored her family: Her kids and Tim were the center of her universe, and she truly enjoyed being a mom and wife.

Mary loved her family and friends. She was known for being a fabulous cook and baker. She was a good, caring and loving person who made others feel happy just by being around her. It seemed she was always smiling, always laughing, and always caring. Her love and compassion showed with her relationship with elderly friends and family, especially her mother-in-law Bertha Kuhns.

Mary loved to feed and watch the birds at her home, and would sit outside with Bertha and others for hours, especially when the migrating Canada geese flew overhead. She also loved to walk and drive to look at God’s creations in nature, especially with Tim. Always ready with a cheerful “Hiya! How are you doing?”, sparkling eyes, a happy smile, and a heartfelt laugh, she showed her deep faith in Jesus by making friends and strangers feel like family. Mary would joyfully spend hours talking and playing cards over coffee, iced tea, or soda. She always made sure people who visited had enough to eat and drink, especially her children’s friends, to whom she was a second mother.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, “Jerry” Schwai; her daughter, Kelly France; and a granddaughter. Her sister Gloria Zaage of Milwaukee and several nieces and nephews were able to visit recently. She leaves behind her loving and devoted husband, Tim; her sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, three sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, nieces, nephews, and many other relations and friends, all who will miss her until we meet again.

As Tim said: “Isn’t it amazing how a good, caring, loving person, can make the people she met feel good. That was our Mary. We love her and will always miss her.”

Mary asked that no service be planned at this time. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to any worthy charity fighting cancer or COPD. They also ask, as she would often say: “For those who grieve, may Jesus Christ give you peace in your time of sorrow.”
