John Martin Buser, 83, of Winneconne died Friday, June, 9, 2023, surrounded by his family at Aurora Medical Center in Oshkosh.

John was born November 7, 1939, to the late Earl and Olga (Schmoker) Buser. He was a 1958 graduate of Winneconne High School and later attended UW-Madison and UW-Oshkosh.

On August 14, 1965, John married Sandra Firle and they enjoyed nearly 58 years of marriage.

In 1966 John enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves and was discharged in 1969. In his earlier years, John was a foreman at Zimmerman Mink Ranch and in 1969 joined his father-in-law, Arnold, at Firl Industries/Fond du Lac Tent and Awning. He became president of Firl and later purchased the business in 1982. He loved his 50 years in business and retired in 2019.

John was a member of Ridgeway Country Club for 47 years. He was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Winneconne, Upper Midwest Canvas Association, Fond du Lac Rotary Club, Winneconne Men’s Club, Winneconne Masonic Lodge 186, and Ducks Unlimited. He proudly served as President of both Upper Midwest Canvas Association and Winneconne Men’s Club.

In John’s free time, he enjoyed deer hunting with his friends in City Point, spending time at the family cabin in Crivitz, duck hunting at the family farm, and fishing in Winneconne, the Turtle Flambeau Flowage and Lake Erie. He also enjoyed playing golf whenever he could.

John is survived by his wife, Sandy; his children, Jeff (Bill), of Menasha; Marty (Julie), of Winneconne; and John (Katie), of Winneconne; his grandchildren, Tyler Buser, Natalie Buser, Mason Buser, Burke Buser, and Ella Buser. He is further survived by a sister, Lorraine Seeman, of Marshfield; his nieces, Joni Peterson and Juli Bartell; great-niece, Heidi (Andrew) Topping; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sue and Kurth Krause, of Rancho Mission Viejo, CA.

Along with his parents, John was also preceded in death by Sandy’s parents, Arnold and Meta Firle; and numerous close friends and relatives.

John’s family would like to thank the staff at Aurora Medical Center for their kind and compassionate care and to all family and friends for their calls, texts and emails. He will be dearly missed by his wife, children, grandchildren and friends.

A visitation for family and friends will be on Saturday, June 24, 2023, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Mueller Funeral Home 904 E. Main St. Winneconne. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 24 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Private interment will be at a later date at the Winneconne Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to or made to the First Presbyterian Church-Winneconne or the Winneconne Area Assistance Center in John’s name.

Ah, dear Sandy and families: My heart is with you. To say that John was always smiling, upbeat, ready to help others... and made everyone he met feel like a long-time, special friend is not enough. No words can capture the uniquely can-do, happy-soul image his memory blesses us with. There's something so good for each of us that lives on -- like the rolling sparkles on the river's curls at sunset, like the peace and purpose we find, as we continue to be inspired to "pass it on." -- John's easy, , open and generous way of creating, sharing the good life. Dan and I are very grateful our families were joined 21 years ago by the marriage of Katie and Johnny. We have so many great memories of time spent with John and Sandy, their kids and grandchildren. John’s joyful smile and laugh, and Sandy’s warm hospitality always made/make us feel like we’re “home” and part of the family. John is loved and already deeply missed but we take comfort in knowing so many share in this grief and love. With great sadness and many happy memories John is remembered by he & Sandy’s “across the street” neighbors, The Allenville Allens, for many years. John was Ross’ confirmation ‘sponsor’ & a frequent and appreciative asparagus customer. Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and community members who loved him.
