Donald James Thiel, age 81, passed away, Sunday, August 20, 2023, at his home in Neenah. He was born in Milwaukee on July 3, 1942, to the late William and Sylvia (Hogan) Thiel.
Jim attended a one-room school in Larsen and graduated from Winneconne High School in 1960. He was a natural born musician and had a local rock and roll band in his early years. He owned a Consolidated Gas Station in Winneconne for many years. Eventually Jim moved to Nashville where he resided for over 40 years. He was employed at the Opryland Hotel as their first banquet manager. He ended his working career at Kerr Brothers in Nashville.
Jim was a devoted Christian, serving as an usher at Cornerstone Church in Nashville for many years. He traveled to Russia on a mission trip and a highlight of his life was a journey to Israel and the Holy Land. Currently, Jim was attending Grace Lutheran Church in Winchester where was confirmed many years ago.
Jim is survived by two daughters, Brenda (Dave) Brusky, Nan (Jeff) Cottrell; grandchildren, Kevin (Jamie) Cottrell, Baylee Cottrell; step-grandchildren, Nick Brusky, Eric Brusky; his siblings, Nancy Armstrong, John (Josephine) Thiel, Betty Deiss, Beverly Wiita, Connie Sauer; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Along with his parents, Jim was also preceded in death by a grandson, Austin Cottrell; his former wife, Barbara Thiel; brothers-in-law, Bruce Armstrong, Roy Deiss, Gary Wiita, and Jerry Sauer.
A private graveside service and burial will be held at the Grace Lutheran Cemetery in Winchester with Pastor Mark Laatsch officiating.

We have such great memories of Jim from the old days. Hanging out in his sound proof music room in his house in Winneconne recording music on cassettes. We visited Jim in Nashville and was given the grand tour of singers homes plus listened to him play some of his original music at his Nashville home. Such a talent was Jim… we will miss you but all our memories of you live on..
