Where Caring Is A Family Tradition
On the morning of Thursday, November 2, 2023, Terry James Angell of Winneconne passed away peacefully after a year-long battle of cancer at the age of 76. Terry was born to Lydia and Lester Angell in Winneconne, WI January 5, 1947. He was a 1965 graduate of Winneconne High School and served in the National Guard from 1968 to 1973. He proceeded to work at Gibson Motors in Oshkosh before going on to work the majority of his career at Mercury Marine where he eventually retired in government sales for parts and accessories.
Terry was a member of the evening Optimist Club in Fond du lac for many years. He enjoyed volunteering at the Thrift and Gift Shop and food pantry in Winneconne. He also helped with Meals on Wheels, working concessions at the horse show in Waukau, and local auctions.
In Terry’s free time, he had a passion for rummaging, always on the hunt for “treasures” as he called them. He loved watching Gunsmoke, Me TV, Larson Farms, and any good YouTube how-to videos including learning how to use his air fryer which he never used. Terry took great pleasure in visiting various spots in the village including playing cribbage with Kim at K & J Beverage, talking with Doris and the crew at Leo’s, the team at State Farm Insurance, and joking with the fun staff at Premier Bank.
Terry loved very much spending time with his family and friends, especially attending the various activities of his grandchildren. In doing so, he often was the one to coordinate or initiate family gatherings and high school reunions. He had a big heart, loved making people laugh, and always saw the best in people.
Terry is survived by his children, Ryan (Jessica) Angell of Darboy; Dawn (Trevr) Smithlin of Neenah; sister, Marlene Yost of Winneconne; brother Les Angell of Appleton; and his grandchildren, Abby and Austin Angell, Kayla and Callie Smithlin. He his further survived by numerous nieces and nephews, and ex-wives Judith Borgardt and Kathleen Mosley.
Preceding Terry in death were his parents, Lydia and Lester Angell; and brothers Elroy and Leland Angell.
A visitation for family and friends will be on Thursday November 9, 2023, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Mueller Funeral Home 904 E. Main St. Winneconne. A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. A private burial will take place at Lake View Memorial Park in Oshkosh.

I met Terry while working summer jobs at Mercury Marine in the 1970s while he was in charge of the parts department in Oshkosh. I had the pleasure working with him for several summers. I was always amazed at his memory knowing what was in stock. This was before computers. Mechanics would come to him asking for a particular part number and he would correct them and tell them the part number they needed! Terry was always a happy person and he enjoyed his work. I always thought fondly of my time working at MM with him throughout my career. Rest in Peace Terry.

I have known Terry since 1984 when I started my marina and would buy parts from him. Later as years passed and I became a Mercury employee we worked together often and in the retirement years of our lives we were part of the same dinner ensemble. He was a kind and caring man and I am going to miss him. In fact, our group had dinner at the Roxy this past Friday night and we put the reservation in under the name of Angell. He was still with us.

I am so sad to hear Terry is no longer among us. He was a bright light here on earth, always smiling and making everyone around him smile. I am sure he was welcomed in heaven.

So sorry for our loss of Terry. I grew up with him and graduated in 1965 with him. "Gunner" as he was known was always fun to be around sharing laughter all the time. Prayers to his family and friends. He will be missed.

I still remember my years in Wisconsin as I moved from Engineering in Fond du Lac, then Oshkosh and back to FDL. As the company grew, my roles changed and one was in the Quicksilver division. While there I met Terry, who always had a smile and usually a joke to tell. In my 31 one years with Mercury, Terry always was high on my best friend list. With my transfers to FL and TN, we had lost contact.
While there are things about Facebook that I dislike, I was able to keep in touch with so many friends and associates from HS, College and my work career. Terry was one of my closest friends and over many years exchanged hundreds of messages and emails. I always enjoyed seeing photos of him and the grandchildren. I'm sure that he was a fantastic husband, father, grandfather and friend to many, many people. He will be greatly missed.
