Daniel C. Markert passed away peacefully, Wednesday, November 29, 2023, at Edenbrook Nursing Home in Appleton with family by his side.

Daniel was born, April 11, 1944, to the late Phil and Mildred “Mickey” (Fisher) Markert. He followed in the family business, working at Markert’s Hardware Store in Winneconne. Dan owned and operated B&D Lawn Grooming, which he ran until his retirement.

On October 10, 1992, he married Paula Twomey.

Dan was a volunteer firefighter for the Winneconne/Poygan Fire Department. Dan loved spending time outdoors, fishing, snowmobiling, pheasant hunting and camping. Bowling was also a favorite. People never had to wonder what Dan was thinking, he ALWAYS told you, be it good, bad or ugly; he had no filter and didn’t mince words. He will be remembered for his deep boisterous laugh and kind heart.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Larsen/Winchester Lions Club in Dan’s name.

Dan’s family would like to thank Paula for her continued and constant care and companionship for Dan, although not always an easy task, Paula was there for him until the end. They would also like to thank the staffs of Fresenius Kidney Care and ThedaCare at Home. “Honey Bear” would like to thank his special caregivers at Edenbrook, Sara (Red), Lacey, Reece and Jaime; and Abbey Vans who provided transportation.

Dan lived across the street from my parents years ago on North Fourth Avenue in Winneconne. He and my dad, Harry Van Dun, were good fishing buddies. The last time I saw Dan was a few minutes after my family left my dad's funeral service at Saint Paul's Lutheran Church the morning of May 3, 2001. I was in the car about to have a meltdown moment when someone tapped me on the shoulder. It was Dan wanting me to know that although he didn't attend the service, he was paying his respects. It meant the world to me that he went so far out of his way to express himself in such a thoughtful and considerate way. Dan's daughter, Michelle, as a child, used to call my dad Harry, "Uncle Hanky." I miss those sweet old times. I am grateful Dan had the comfort of family until his last breath. I know in my heart he is at peace.
