Where Caring Is A Family Tradition
John "Ben" Benard Arbaugh, age 55, was called home to his Lord and Savior on June 16, 2018, with his wife, three sons, and two puppies by his side.
Ben was born to John and Annette (Clatworthy) Arbaugh on July 8, 1962, and grew up in St. Albans and Hamlin, West Virginia. Ben attended Marshall University from 1980-1984 where he earned his BBA in Management. He then attended Wright State University earning an MBA in 1989, and The Ohio State University where he earned a second Master's degree and his PhD. in 1994. Ben also served in the U.S. Air Force from 1985-1989 and was commissioned in 1985.
Ben moved to Oshkosh, Wisconsin in 1994 to take a position as a faculty member in the College of Business at UW-Oshkosh. Ben was a pioneer in the world of online education. As one of the leading researchers in the field, Ben had over 80 articles and book chapters published which included 17 best article/best paper awards. He has also published 2 books related to his work on online learning in business schools. To date, his work has been cited over 9,000 times. He played prominent roles in the Academy of Management, serving as Chair of the Management Education and Development Division from 2006-2007. During 2009-2011 Ben served as editor of Academy of Management Learning and Education, the first scholar from a Masters Comprehensive university to be selected as editor of an Academy of Management journal. Ben also won numerous awards at the University including The John McNaughton Rosebush Professorship, The Edward M. Penson Distinguished Teaching Award and the Curwood, Inc. Endowed Professorship. Ben worked for UW-Oshkosh for 24 years and retired on June 3, 2018, due to declining health.
Ben met his wife Paula (Miller) Arbaugh at Community Church in Oshkosh and they were married on March 15, 1997. They lived in Oshkosh for the first 4 years of their marriage and then moved to Winneconne in 2001. Ben and Paula have three sons Alexander (Xander) Arbaugh (20), Addison Arbaugh (18), and Aidan Arbaugh (15) all living at home. Ben is survived by his parents, John Arbaugh, of Barboursville, WV and Annette Arbaugh, of St. Albans, WV; and his siblings, Joseph Arbaugh, of Barboursville, WV; Lara Barry, of St. Albans, WV; and Tony (Ashely) Arbaugh, of Hamlin, WV.
He was preceded in death by grandparents, Charles and Myrtle Arbaugh and Frank and Madeline Clatworthy.
Ben was a faithful follower of Christ and enjoyed studying and discussing God's word. In his college days he was actively involved in Campus Crusade for Christ and continued to support college based ministries throughout his life.
Ben was known for his quirky sense of humor and extreme intellect. He was a voracious reader and particularly enjoyed religious and historical writings. Ben enjoyed cheering on Marshall's Thundering Herd only second to cheering on his sons in their Winneconne Wolves activities (music, art, theater, academics, and football). Ben was a loving husband and father and a very selfless man that continually put the wants and needs of others above his own.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Community Church, 2351 Ryf Road Oshkosh, WI on Saturday June 23, 2018, with visitation starting at 9:00 a.m. and service starting at 11:00 a.m.
A special thank you goes out to our family and friends for all the help and prayers we received during our cancer journey and to all of the staff at Ascension's Cancer Center and Hospice for their excellent care!
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to a trust fund for Ben and Paula's children and to the Ascension Health Care Cancer Centers at St. Elizabeth and Mercy Hospitals.
If you wish please submit online condolences to muellerfuneralhomeinc.com.

Our annual meeting of the Academy of Management will not be the same without Ben's wise and cheerful counsel. He was a great colleague who reached out to many of us in unique and valuable ways. We will miss him deeply.

I consider Ben to be one of my most influential mentors in the 'art' of professional peer-reviews for academic journals. I also consider Ben to be my friend and valued coauthor. To his family in this sad time, I offer my best thoughts, wishes, and condolences for their loss. He will be remembered.

We are sorry to hear of Ben's home going. We attended Hamlin High School with Ben, and were in the Hamlin Baptist youth group together. One of our favorite memories of Ben was the Sunday morning our youth group led the worship service. Ben, with a mic, was hiding under a pew in the choir loft. When one of us prayed the Lord's Prayer in front of the congregation, Ben, playing the part of the Father, responded to each line.
Pray-er: "Our Father who art in heaven..."
Ben: "Yes? What can I do for you?" and so on.
Ben is most likely carrying on a lively face to face conversation with His Lord right now.
I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this? (Jesus, in John 11:25-26)

Ben was a gentle and kind soul, a sincere friend and colleague, a scholar's scholar, and a humble and gracious man. He mentioned once to me that I had given him his scholarly start in management education research since as editor I had accepted his first paper in the Journal of Management Education in the late 1990s. With gratitude for Ben's many subsequent contributions, we will miss Ben deeply.

Ben was a tireless worker in our Management Education & Development Division at the Academy and in his role as online education researcher in chief and his Editorship of the Academy of Management Learning & Education journal. Even while doing all this, he never missed a meeting of the Advisory Board of the Organization Management Journal and shared some of his best work on our pages while at the same time offering great advice to me while I was editor of that journal. I enjoyed our many hours of fellowship at the annual Academy meetings and I already can't believe he will not be around for future meetings. I learned a lot about Ben's family during those days, all of which has been demonstrated in the love that surrounded him in his illness and passing. Ben was blessed right to the end, but what a loss!

I offer my condolences to Bens family. I am very sorry for your loss, and I cant imagine what you must be feeling now. I had the privilege to work with Ben on projects involving the CoI and also PAR. Even more amazing than his incredible intellect was the integrity with which he approached his work, all the while offering his colleagues a profound sense of compassion and sharing his goofy sense of humor. I pray that over time, your healing will allow your justifiable grief to be complemented by a sense of gratitude for how well Ben lived his life. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

May fond memories of Ben bring you comfort during this hard time in your life. Look back on all the good memories you were able to have and smile at the fact that you were able to share these. My heart and sympathies go out to you and your family.
Proverbs 10:7 The memory of the righteous one is due for a blessing."
Something that gives us great comfort is the Bible truth that death is not the dot or period at the end of a sentence, but rather the comma or pause because our dear loved ones will live again. We know that we will see our loved ones again because the beautiful promise recorded at Revelation 21:4 "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore." What a truly special day so close at hand to be able to embrace our loved ones again!

I worked with Ben for a good number of years in our various roles within the Academy of Management and later on the Academy of Management Learning & Education journal. More recently I learned from Ben that he had a liking for soccer and quickly realized he knew more about the UK football leagues than I did! He developed an interest in the recent successes of the team of my home city of Lincoln in the UK (The Imps). In a video Skype meeting between the two of us earlier this year, he appeared on screen proudly wearing a Lincoln City Football Club supporters shirt! Ben was one of the nicest, humble and selfless people I have ever had the privilege to know. He will be sadly missed. My thoughts are with his family at this very difficult time.

Ben was a great colleague and friend and one that I turned to share ideas and to ensure that the scholarly work I did served our community's priorities, something he too remained always passionate about. He will be so much missed from many of us in the MED Division of the Academy of Management at our Annual Conference in August this Summer. Ben will be with us in spirit and his memory will leave a lasting legacy in our community. May he rest in peace knowing he has done such good to so many colleagues and students during his life. Deepest sympathies to Paula and his children as well as parents, siblings and all the family, who will be so proud to know that they had a 'Giant' of a Man a true HUMAN in Ben. I was honored to be one of Dr. Arbaugh's students in the MBA program. He was a great encourager--of both my career and personal goals. In all my years of education, he was a favorite. He taught me. He challenged me. When I learned of his battle with cancer, my heart ached for him and his family. But then I learned of his relationship with Jesus Christ and my heart rejoiced. How comforting to know he is in heaven, pain free, meeting his Savior.
My condolences to the Arbaugh family. Thank you for sharing him with us. How proud you must be.

Ben was one of my friends at Hamlin High School. He was so funny and so smart. He had a great smile. If I didn't know the answer to homework questions, Ben would usually have the answer! So sad to hear of his passing, but not surprised at all at his successes. Heartfelt condolences for his family and friends. HHS Bobcats forever. Go Herd

Ben and I were colleagues and collaborators on Community of Inquiry online learning research. His intelligence, intellectual honesty, and just all around competence will be sorely missed. But above all, Ben was a good man, a devoted husband and father. I don't ever remember a time we talked when he didn't have something to say about his children always with a light in his eyes.
