On Monday, December 3, 2018, Doris Kallas, age 91, of Winneconne; mom, grandma, great-grandma, and great-great-grandma, left this earth peacefully to reunite with Pa. Her final days were spent at Eden Meadows in Oshkosh.
She was born August 15, 1927. Doris married Vernon Kallas on May 18, 1946, and they lived in Eureka a spell. Dad came home one day and gave Mom the deed to a farm on Cty Rd K and said we are moving. They farmed until dad's retirement then built a house on the channel of Lake Poygan.
As a child mom took piano lessons and she wanted to go to school with her best friend Elaine, at the Catholic school in Berlin, where she grew up; it lasted a week before she got caught, and then it was back to public school.
Mom was a 4-H leader and a very active member of St. St. Mary Parish in Omro. For years she was a gardener, everything was canned and who will ever forget her famous pickles. What a baker she was also; coming home on Friday to the aroma of doughnuts, long johns, cinnamon rolls, and bread, Jeez... She did it all - sewing, crocheting, quilting, and many other crafts that kept her busy at night and into the winter.
Doris worked at Rippin' Good Cookies and Hoeft's Grocery in Omro. She would come home at night and at supper repeat the whole day. One day Pa said "You can pack your ag and move there or quit tomorrow" LOL she quit.
Mom was a proud person and very faithful. She had no fear of leaving and welcomed the fact to be with all of her loved ones in Paradise. I'm sure Pa was the first to greet her.
She was never wrong. Once she had her mind set no one or anything could change it. I think we all can remember, unless you were one that never got in trouble, she would yell at you, then say "You just wait till your father gets home."
The holidays at home were wonderful. She made more cookies and candy then anyone I know. She always tried to make everyone's favorite.
We will always remember walking into her room and hearing her say hi to you and I love you.
Mom, you had such a warm, inviting smile. All of her grandchildren held a special place in her heart.
Now we can shed tears that she is gone, or we can smile because she lived and she was our Mom. We can close our eyes and pray she'll come back or open our eyes and see what she left. Our hearts will ache because we can't see her so let's be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. We will remember and cherish the memories and let them live on to our children and grandchildren. She doesn't want us to cry, she wants us to keep smiling, love, and go on. She will always be in our hearts; her laughter will be our joy. Thank you Lord for our mom. Jeez mom we sure are gonna miss ya.
Doris is survived by five children, Dave (Linda) Kallas, Judy (Dennis) Fleck, Dennis Kallas, Darlene Malnory, Darryl "Duke" (Mary) Kallas; nineteen grandchildren; thirty-four great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
Preceding Doris in death were her husband, Vernon Kallas; three grandchildren, Dennis Michael, Jason, and Grace; and a daughter-in-law, Lois Kallas.
A visitation for family and friends will be on Saturday, December 8, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Mueller Funeral Home 904 E. Main St. Winneconne. A funeral service will be held at Noon on Saturday at the funeral home with Sr. Pam Biehl officiating. Burial will follow in the Rushford Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the staff of Eden Meadows for caring for their mom.
If you wish please submit online condolences to muellerfuneralhomeinc.com.
